Persistent memory in the form of NVDIMMs are being adopted in server and storage applications to increase system performance. NVDIMMs can provide lower latency, higher IOPS, and greater endurance. NVDIMMs have been evolving for many years, but the industry ecosystem is now in place to support more widespread adoption. Standard taxonomy for different types of NVDIMMs has been adopted by JEDEC. Current industry work is focused on the release of a NVDIMM-aware Linux kernel along with further JEDEC standardization support for a common I2C command set and SPD definitions. The talk will discuss the functionality of NVDIMMs, provide an update on the on-going industry efforts around NVDIMMs and SCMs, and explore potential applications, with particular emphasis on IMC use cases.
